MARK RUWEDEL /// MESSAGE FROM THE EXTERIOR         de | en

I love John Divola´s book ›Isolated Houses,‹ which was published many years ago by Nazraeli Press. The series shows color photographs of small and smallest houses, which stand really isolated in desert regions around Los Angeles. They are in good nick, freshly painted, wired, at night light burns, cars park in front of the doors and dogs are watching. But that´s 20 years ago. At least.

Mark Ruwedel also traveled the desert regions near Los Angeles. And like Divola, he photographed single houses. Closer, black and white. But what really makes the difference: the houses are abandoned, are broken, actually ruins. The remnants of the many failed attempts of humans to establish themselves at least temporarily in the desert. Ruwedel has made strong images, in broad daylight and at dusk.

And what is the message? Perhaps that it is not so easy to turn your back to civilization and lead an independent life out there.

Strong book, at any rate.
