KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER /// HALBSTARKE         de | en

Rebels without a cause, Zurich 1958.

Elvis, Brando, Dean have entered the world stage. Adolescents in sleepy Switzerland wake up and go the full monty.

Jeans, rivets, hairstyles.
Chains, cigarettes, sunglasses.
Mopeds, music and beer.

Karlheinz Weinberger is very close with his camera and photographs the youngsters in action and in dense portraits. Everyone wants to be the coolest, boys and girls pose like crazy. Exactly that and the photographer`s unconditional interest for the nonconformist bunch makes the series so strong.

Weinberger was only discovered shortly before his death in 2006 by the art world. Tens of thousands of pictures have been archived, numbered and indexed by now. With Halbstarke as Volume #1, Sturm & Drang publishers will follow with more releases that cover topics such as sports, tattoos and insignias, his travels to the South of Italy, and the extensive work he did with biker gangs and rockers in the 1970s and 80s.
